ꕥ Review :

A world where everyone has a shadow, but very few have awakened and control it. Holly Black immerses us in a dark fantasy and urban world, full of magic, mysteries, and power. A challenging world where survival is key, facing the Crepusculians, perceived as a superior race to be wary of and to worship their uncommon powers. We follow Charlie, who holds onto her life by a thread, questioning it. A petty thief, but in reality, excelling in the art of manipulation, she has often faced stronger opponents and emerged unscathed… until now.

It sounds intriguing, doesn’t it ? This world with its unique magic is original, refreshing, mysterious, and full of potential… unfortunately, wasted. And yes, it is with a certain sadness that I share my first disappointment with the incredible author that is Holly Black. Not in her writing talent, which is unquestionable, but in the concept that could have been a hit if more developed and elaborated upon. I am frustrated that she didn’t do more with the power to manipulate shadows ; it is described and reserved for the « villains » of the book without ever being truly used among the characters. In fact, I waited on every page to be captivated by the story, the characters, and the uniqueness of this dark fantasy magic world. But the interest died in the bud. It felt like a failed soufflé that collapses before having the chance to rise.

As for the plot, much like the story, it drags on and stretches thin. The ending is nice but not stunning enough to justify the preceding 400 pages. It also fails to build enough suspense to make me eager to read the sequel in the second book.

In short, there’s good writing with an immersive dark fantasy atmosphere that draws you in. However, the story lacks the necessary hook to maintain that immersion. It presents a new and original idea that hasn’t fully realized its potential. For those looking to start an adventure with Holly Black, don’t begin with this one, as it might not showcase the extent of her talent. And for those, like me, who read it to continue the pleasure and/or the longing for the masterpiece of The Cruel Prince trilogy, you’ll find similarities between the characters Jude and Charlie but without the same sense of plot twists and political stakes found in The Cruel Prince.

Elle a passé la moitié de sa vie à travailler pour des crépusculiens, des magiciens qui manipulent les ombres afin d’espionner ou même tuer des gens. Lorsqu’une figure de son passé refait surface, Charlie replonge dans un tourbillon de meurtres et de mensonges. Déterminée à survivre, elle va devoir affronter de nombreux adversaires qui essaient de s’emparer d’un secret au pouvoir terrifiant. C’est alors que Charlie se lance à la recherche du Livre de la Nuit…

ꕥ Avis :

Un univers où tout le monde à une ombre mais où très peu l’ont éveillée et l’ont sous contrôle. Holly Black nous plonge dans un monde urbain sombre, fait de magie, de mystères et de pouvoir. Un monde difficile, où la survie est de mise face aux crépusculiens qui sont perçu comme une race supérieure dont il faut se méfier et vénérer leurs pouvoirs peu commun. On suit Charlie qui tient sa vie entre les deux bouts en la remettant en question. Voleuse de pacotille mais en vérité qui excelle dans cet art de la manigance, elle s’est souvent frottée à plus fort qu’elle en s’en sortant indemne… jusqu’à maintenant.

Cela donne envie, pas vrai ? Cet univers avec une magie bien à lui est original, rafraîchissant, mystérieux, plein de potentiel… malheureusement gâché. Et oui, c’est avec une tristesse certaine que je vous fait part de ma première déception de cette auteure incroyable qu’est Holly Black. Non pas sur son talent d’écriture qui est, lui, irrévocable mais bel et bien de ce concept qui aurait pu être un carton si davantage développé et étayé. Je suis frustrée qu’elle n’en ai pas fait plus concernant ce pouvoir de tailler des ombres ; il est décrit et réservé pour les « méchants » du livre sans jamais être réellement utiliser entre les personnages. En fait, j’ai attendu à chaque page de m’accrocher à l’histoire, aux personnages et à la singularité de ce monde de magie de dark fantasy. Mais l’intérêt est mort dans l’œuf. Cela m’a fait l’effet d’un soufflé raté qui tombe avant avoir eu la chance de gonfler.

Pour ce qui est de l’intrigue, tout comme l’histoire, elle traîne en longueur et tire sur la corde. Le final est sympa mais pas assez stupéfiant pour justifier les 400 pages précédentes. Il n’instaure d’ailleurs pas assez de suspens pour avoir envie de lire la suite dans le tome 2.

En bref, une bonne écriture avec une ambiance immersive de dark fantasy dans laquelle on peut se plonger. Mais une histoire sans l’accroche nécessaire pour rester dans cette immersion. Une idée nouvelle et originale qui n’est pas aller au bout de son potentiel. Pour ceux qui aimerait commencer une aventure avec Holly Black, ne commencez pas par la lecture celui-ci, car il ne vous montrerai pas l’ampleur de son talent. Et pour ceux qui, comme moi, ont lu ça pour poursuivre le plaisir et/ou le manque du chef d’oeuvre de la trilogie du Prince Cruel ; vous retrouverez des similitudes entre le personnage de Jude et de Charlie mais sans les sensations de rebondissements et d’enjeux politique du Prince Cruel.

ꕥ Review :

I finished 2023 and begun 2024 with this book serie and it absolutely had my heart ! The author makes us dive in a rich, well developed fantasy world, where you’ll discover some extraordinary creatures.

We get through the political stakes and stories of the royal family at Terrafae. Her writing is irreproachable, her words are relevant and her story all well rounded, in the end everything sticks and fit perfectly. One of the thing that I liked the most is the main (and secondary) character development. She’s not like a lot of others fantasy characters : dull, naive, no personnality and no depth ; on the contrary, Jude is perfectly human with ego, sins, ambitions and her darkness. She’s real and interesting so we can relate to her.

And when we are reading the third volume, we can see that everything has changed and evolved and that she’s a whole new (badass) woman. Personnaly, that’s a sign of a sucess in a book.

The story is incredible : the suspens, the twists and turns, the conspiracies, the treachery and the manipulation never end ! It’s one of the first time that I find the second book to be better than the first one. I find nothing to change. I’ll just add : don’t trust Booktok when you see this book in the romance category. Because you’ll be disappointed if you only read it for the romance. Even tho it’s real and there, it is very secondary. This book is an enemies to lovers and a VERY slooooooooow burn. And if you want some smut you will not find it there. But some recommendations are on the way, don’t worry 😉
